Project Officer on Digital Application in the field of “sustainable forest management”

The Cluster “Environment and Climate Change” currently comprises a total of four teams in the thematic areas of climate policy, climate and agriculture coast and water, biodiversity and forests. The latter includes the project “Management and Protection of Protected areas with diverse ecosystems in Viet Nam” (MEPA), and “Forest Support Programme” (FSP). The projects are implemented together with the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment (MAE). The projects are funded by BMZ and the EU and implemented by GIZ together with the Viet Nam Forestry Administration to enhance regulatory, institutional and technical capacities for implementing integrated management of forests at a landscape level.

 

The projects are looking for a qualified and professional local candidate to fill the following position:

 

Project Officer on Digital Application

in the field of “sustainable forest management”

Duty station: Hanoi

Duration: Staring from 01.10.2026 for a 3 years contract

 

Main responsibilities and tasks:

  • Design and operationalize digital solutions: design, test, and deploy digital solutions for forest monitoring, field data collection, and spatial analytics while enhancing partner capacity.
  • Integrate advanced geospatial technologies: deploy advanced technologies (Remote Sensing, UAVs/Drones, IoT, Machine Learning, GPS, SMART) into project operations and workflows.
  • Satellite imagery and geospatial analysis: process and analyze satellite data to monitor forest cover changes, deforestation, degradation, and land encroachment.
  • Produce thematic GIS maps: create high-quality GIS maps to support forest management planning, spatial analysis, and technical reporting.
  • Coordinate UAV/drone missions: plan and execute UAV flight missions to capture high-resolution aerial imagery for canopy assessment, biomass estimation, and forest health tracking.
  • Manage SMART and field tools: lead the configuration and maintenance of the SMART application for patrol management, and support field hardware/apps (GPS, KoboToolbox, QField, ArcGIS Field Maps).
  • Deploy IoT and machine learning models: integrate IoT sensors and fire alert systems; implement machine learning models for automated vegetation classification and early deforestation alerts.
  • Manage spatial databases and automation: oversee spatial database architecture, security, and interoperability, and develop custom scripts to automate data workflows.
  • Capacity building and guidelines: develop SOPs, technical guidelines, and conduct training sessions/workshops for forest rangers, partners, and local communities.
  • Technical reporting and ad-hoc tasks: prepare technical reports and policy briefs for GIZ and partners, and perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

 

Minimum requirements:

  • Master’s Degree in GIS, Remote Sensing, Forestry, Natural Resources Management, Computer Science / IT, Environmental Studies, or related fields.
  • Certifications in GIS, Remote Sensing, or SMART software.
  • 4 years applying digital technologies to forestry, natural resources management, or environmental conservation projects.
  • 2 years in international development cooperation focusing on sustainable forest or natural resources management.
  • Strong understanding of the Vietnamese context regarding forestry, biodiversity conservation, value chains, and climate change.
  • Advanced proficiency in ArcGIS, QGIS, ENVI, GEE, UAV mapping/photogrammetry (Agisoft), and spatial databases (PostGIS, PostgreSQL, MS SQL).
  • Hands-on experience in SMART administration and GPS protocols. Python/R for spatial analysis and Machine Learning is desirable.
  • Proven ability to facilitate technical training for non-technical field personnel; proficient in MS Office/Teams, e-learning (Moodle), and modeling tools.
  • Strategic thinking, strong analytical, creative problem-solving, and diplomatic skills.
  • Self-organized, collaborative, adaptable, and able to manage multiple deadlines under pressure.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills in Vietnamese and English (technical report writing required).
  • Willingness to travel to project sites in Vietnam (and brief trips abroad, if any) and work flexible hours when necessary.
